‘Soft Boundaries’ is a one-day installation curated by Concrete Collar in collaboration with artist Ali Kirby and fashion designer Andrew Bell.

Commissioned by Dublin Port Company and the Irish Architecture Foundation, Soft Boundaries encompasses fashion, architecture, sound and movement and is the first installation of its kind to take place during Open House Dublin.

In this site-responsive experience, performers present the MA collection of RCA graduate Andrew Bell amongst new sculptural assemblages by artist Ali Kirby. The Dublin Port Centre, a six storey concrete frame office building designed in 1976 by Scott Tallon Walker, forms the architectural setting for this work.

Soft Boundaries explores our relationship with modernism and consumerism. Bell’s work, through its innovative tailoring techniques imagines a future of flat pack clothing. Using sonic welding and taping technology his pieces challenge the material hierarchies that shape our understanding of the ‘luxury’ ideal. In response to the built environment, Kirby’s sculptural pieces elevate the everyday by adopting architectural construction materials and a refined, muted palette.

Choreographed by contemporary dancer Sibéal Davitt to a hypnotic soundscape by architect and DJ Gareth Smyth, performances take place on an ad-hoc basis. Each performer is given their own repetitive route and gestures, mimicking the hum-drum pace of office life. Smyth’s original composition samples Jacques Tati’s ‘Playtime’ film, the 1967 surrealist masterpiece about modern office life, along with sounds of the nearby docklands.

Taking inspiration from the Dublin Port Centre’s geometric form and the office blinds that dominate its lobby space, graphic designer Emma Conway created a visual identity for the event, along with a series of limited edition posters.

Make up artist Sarah Lanagan referenced an 80s power woman in her look which featured a soft charcoal grey eye and sleek side parted ponytails tied with rubber bands.
